About Us

Patio featuring flowers and plants

Hempstead Manor uses the Eden Alternative™ philosophy to creative a more comfortable environment for our residents. This philosophy centers around combatting the three plagues of traditional nursing communities - loneliness, helplessness and boredom. This is accomplished through the creation of neighborhoods, and the addition of plants, animals, and children to the nursing home. We hope to encourage the growth of the human spirit through variety, spontaneity, and the ability to give and receive care.

Residents may be involved to any extent they wish, but it is our hope that they will make friends with their neighbors and staff as well as welcome new residents and participate in the care of our animals and plants.

Family members and friends are encouraged to become involved with the decision-making process and to provide input and service to different elements of the nursing community.

Employees participate in all Eden activities including such things as watering plants, walking dogs, sharing current events, helping with bulletin boards, and attending neighborhood meetings regularly. This also includes getting to know the residents and other employees, and paying attention to interests and backgrounds.
